What are Tension headaches & 'normal' headaches?

They may feel like a constant ache that affects both sides of the head. You can also feel the neck muscles tighten at the back of your head where your spine joins your skull. You might also a feel a pressure behind the eyes.

A tension headache normally is not severe enough to prevent you doing everyday activities.

It usually lasts for 30 minutes to several hours, but can last for several days.
Numerous things can trigger a tension headache however the most common Rob treats for are:

  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Poor Posture

Treatment for Tension and normal Headaches

Rob can treat a tension headaches using massage, mobilisations and acupuncture + an exercise programme.

1. Massage can help relax the muscles in the neck and shoulders, this can open a window to then do further treatments such as mobilisations or more intense exercises to reduce your tension headaches.

2. Mobilisations can also help if a specific vertebrae in your spine is causing extra pain relating to your tension headache.

3. Acupuncture can help (NICE guidelines recommend it) a course of up to 10 sessions over a 5-8 week period to help relax the muscles around your neck and offer pain relief for your neck and reduce your headache symptoms, eventually reducing the frequency ang longevity of them.

4. As already mentioned, exercises can also help with posture and tightness to stop the headaches coming back.
